There were quite a number of individuals who seemed to have partaken in questionable and illegal behavior in the past, at least according to their rather vague profiles. Also I'm sure the motivation of getting to escape the island and return to their home was enough enticement for those who had the potential for such cruelty within them.
In fact ... it's probably easiest to be so wretched in this first week, before one might have the opportunity to truly get attached to anyone.
